The Effective Science of Fighting
In Grappling (also called submission grappling or submission fighting), all the techniques of combat sports are used: pins, joint locks, chokes, and painful pressure. Matches take place both standing and on the ground. Throwing techniques are used to knock the opponent down, and the fight continues on the ground until the finisher.
The technique is delivered in a highly controlled manner to allow the opponents to surrender safely without injury or trauma. In addition to a submission, a fight can be won by scoring more technical points. These are achieved both in standing and ground fighting, by gaining a dominant position or by completely overturning the opponent.
UFC History & Evolution
Grappling is an important component of MMA (Mixed Martial Arts), a combat sport in which both striking and grappling are permitted. The first MMA fighters gained international popularity in the 1990s. The first American UFC tournaments allowed spectators around the world to witness how experts easily prevailed over their opponents, not by striking them, but by taking them to the ground and forcing them to submit.
This historic evolution led to the development of this particular technique being intensively studied by MMA fighters, significantly contributing to the spread of this fighting style worldwide. During grappling matches, athletes wear shorts and a tight-fitting shirt (rashguard). The duration of the match varies cleanly depending on the category and level, spanning from 4 to 10 minutes.
